Taysom Hill is making his first official quarterback start of the 2021 season on Thursday night versus the Cowboys.
Hill is a versatile player on the Saints, sometimes playing as a wide receiver, running back or tight end. He’s most known to be a quarterback, though. This season, Hill lost the quarterback contest to Jameis Winston. However, Winston has been out since Week 9 due to a season-ending ACL injury. Trevor Siemian has taken over since, but has yet to win a game.
Hill played quarterback at BYU and was known for his speed. But, just how fast is Hill?
How fast is Taysom Hill?
In 2017, Hill went undrafted from BYU, but participated in BYU Pro Day. It was during this day that he recorded his famous 40-yard dash time of 4.46 seconds. According to the Relative Athlete Score, this correlates to a 9.97 out of 10.0 rating. His 20-yard dash time was recorded at 2.55 seconds, which is a 9.98 out of 10.0 rating. Finally, his 10-yard dash time was 1.61 seconds, resulting in a 9.21 out of 10.0 rating.
Based on his performance, the Packers signed Hill to their practice squad. Green Bay ultimately dropped Hill before the regular season began, though. This is when the Saints picked him up.

What is Taysom Hill’s fastest recorded time?
Since being with the Saints, Hill has continued to show how fast he can be. During the Saints’ 2019 Thanksgiving game, Hill reached a speed 20.17 mph, which remains his fastest speed in the NFL so far. At the time, it was the sixth quickest play by a quarterback that year.
In 2020, Hill started as the Saints quarterback in four games while Drew Brees dealt with a rib injury. He rushed a career high 83 yards that season. His 2020 performance helped him transition to the running back, wide receiver and tight end positions during the 2021 season. He proved that he could carry a ball quickly and far.
Who are the fastest quarterbacks in the NFL?
Often, a quarterback’s speed is determined by their 40-meter dash time. Before the 2021 season, now Bears quarterback Justin Fields recorded a 4.44 second dash time, which is close to Hill’s time from 2017.
Two of the quickest quarterbacks in the league right now, Lamar Jackson and Kyler Murray, both didn’t run the 40-meter dash.
Madden ’21 sparked a debate about the fastest quarterbacks last year, after they announced their top five ranked quarterbacks. Jackson and Murray took the top two spots, respectively, with Hill followed behind at third. Marcus Mariota and Tyrod Taylor finished out the list, and they both don’t start in the NFL this season.
In Madden ’22’s list, Fields beat Hill for the third overall spot.
Was Taysom Hill fast in college?
Hill played for BYU football from 2012-2016. Hill continues to hold the record for most rushing yards by a quarterback, and he ranks at No. 5 all-time for rushing yards with 2,815. Out of his 33 starts, nine of those games resulted in over 100 rushing yards by Hill.
While he was a prospect for the NFL, NFL.com commented that Hill had “okay speed.” BYU’s website was not thrilled about this statement, especially because Hill continued to prove that he was fast for a quarterback. Here’s a video they posted showing his running highlights.
Taysom Hill high school football and track career
Hill attended Highland High School in Idaho. He brought his school their first state championship since 2002 when he started as quarterback in 2008. He was named All-Idaho Player of the Year because of this.
During his high school career, Hill rushed for 1,491 yards and 24 touchdowns. He averaged 10.2 yards per carry and 124.3 rushing yards per game.
Believe it or not, Hill’s speed is credited a lot to his track career in high school. His main events consisted of the 200 meter race and the long jump. His personal best time came from his sophomore regional meet in Idaho, where he recorded a 22.5 second 200 meter race. He also ran the fourth leg of his 4 x 200 meter relay, which his team won first place finishing at 1:31:41.
