Only one more set of rankings — the only ones that matter — separates college football from the ultimate stage in the sport.
Following Saturday’s conference championship games, the top three teams should consist of, in some order, Alabama, Clemson and Ohio State. Naturally, the fourth and final spot is where the debate lies: Will the College Football Playoff selection committee go with 10-1 Notre Dame which lost 34-10 in the ACC title game? Or will it go with Texas A&M (8-1), which won Saturday but did not get to participate in a conference championship?
Hey, it wouldn’t be a selection show without some form of debate, would it?
Other questions for the committee to consider: whether Cincinnati (9-0) or Coastal Carolina (11-0) is deserving of the Group of 5’s New Year’s Day 6 spot, and how to order such teams as Oklahoma (8-2), Georgia (7-2), and North Carolina (8-3), among others.
